The guapuruvu is a deciduous large tree and can easily reach 30 meters in height. It occurs naturally in dense deciduous and seasonal evergreen forest. Its trunk is straight, with branches only at the top. The bark is gray, with scars caused by falling leaves and lenticels. Its crown is high and open, with little shade. The leaves are alternate, large, about 1 meter long and fall with the passage of time. They are composed bipinnate, with small, elliptical leaflets and opposites. The inflorescences arise from August to November in numerous dense clusters, erect, yellow flowers and very showy. The fruits ripen in autumn and are bivalvas pods, from obovate shape and brown color. Each carries just a big, smooth, oblong and hard seed covered by a papery wing that is dispersed by winds.
